Sakura

This year, the 10th edition of the iconic Sakura floral display uncovers the hidden gems of Fukuoka Prefecture and showcases the largest number and widest variety of cherry blossom trees to date. The yozakura (night sakura) experience returns for the second time, featuring a recreation of Fukuoka City’s striking light installation, the Phantom Castle – an artistic interpretation of a castle tower believed to have once existed. Other highlights include a recreation of the historic Kokura Castle in the city of Kitakyushu, and the enchanting bamboo lanterns featured in the city’s annual Takeakari Bamboo Lantern Festival, brought in from Japan.

Floral Display Highlights

Fukuoka Castle’s “Phantom Tower”

Fukuoka Castle was built for Kuroda Nagamasa, a feudal lord who served the Tokugawa shogunate, featuring a design both ingenious and imposing, with the Naka River flowing as a natural moat to the east and mudflats fortifying the west. Discover Japanese craft traditions in wood, thread, and ink at the display.

Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle remains a five-storey keep of samurai exhibits, an observatory, and a theatre, reassembled in 1959 over the bones of what burned in 1866 during the Second Chōshū expedition. The castle is notable for being granted permission to plant cherry trees by the Tokugawa shogunate, a rare privilege, and is now famous for its springtime cherry blossoms.

Kokura Castle Bamboo Lights

This year, for the first time, 130 bamboo lanterns from Kokura Castle’s 2024 event have travelled beyond Japan, bringing their amber glow to Gardens by the Bay’s Flower Dome in Singapore. A meeting of seasons – between spring’s sakura and autumn’s lanterns – made possible through the efforts of over 1,000 local volunteers of Kitakyushu city.

Ema

At Shinto shrines and temples across Japan, you’ll see rows of ema (small wooden votive plaques) fluttering in the breeze on racks, bearing wishes in both writing and drawings. Wishes, as important as “May my water lilies grow well this season” and “May my loved one heal”, are inscribed in reverent strokes. Once hung, they remain beside countless others, all connecting each dreamer to something greater.

Featured Plants

Gardens by the bay

Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis (Chishima-zakura, Kurile cherry)

A relatively early-blooming cherry, typically bearing white or pale pink flowers and thrives in even colder regions, including the Kuriles, Sakhalin, and the mountainous areas of Hokkaido and Honshu.

Gardens by the bay

Prunus × yedoensis ‘Jindai-akebono’

Flowers early with large, pale pink to nearly white blossoms. Its name Akebono refers to dawn, reflecting the soft, luminous quality of its blooms. A newer cultivar, it is increasingly planted as a replacement for ageing Yoshino cherry trees.

Gardens by the bay

Prunus lannesiana ‘Kawazu-zakura'

Native to Japan and also a relatively early bloomer, its blossoms are deep pink or light red and relatively large at around 3 cm. This distinguishes it from most other cherry trees, which tend to have lighter-coloured blossoms.
